Current mood: bruised

Onwards
It's moving day tomorrow. I've spent the last four weeks or so obsessively cleaning the place. The damp in our room is particularly horrible. I suspect I've started to get a mad glint in my eye every time the Hack goes near one of the many bleached, vinegared, salted and scrubbed surfaces. The flat smells a little like a chippy at the moment, but it's pretty damn clean.

The stress of the last four months has been immense. New job with M&S: old tricks from the landlord. Viewings of flats. Debts. Too little sleep and too much sugar. But enough of these tiresome and depressing things.

I've had some fun days out with friends. I saw In The Loop, which was the first time I've laughed so much in ages. It was political satire of a vicious, biting and utterly hilarious sort.

Work is going well. I've had a member of the Board visit me, and it went swimmingly. My boss called me a commercial animal (heh). But which animal...? Dread to think.

My library of books has become a touch unwieldy. Packing them has taken a long time. I haven't had as much free time as I'd like recently so I actually have an unread pile for the first time in my life.

I slipped and fell this morning coming out of the bathroom. My feet just went: I imagine I looked like one of those cartoon characters making those binkabinkabinka noises as their feet whirl in the air before they splat onto the ground.

Alas, not as amusing for me. It bloody hurt. When I went to Ikea to pick up a rug to hide the burn mark on the carpet, people were giving me odd looks. Realised what with the cut arms and bruised hands and limp, I looked like I'd gone a couple of rounds with an angry cricketer.

Found all my BPAL scents. BPAL, how I've missed you. Et Lux Fuit was particularly cheery with its flower-sunny-honey yumminess.

I reread Secret Vampire this morning, right before measuring my length on the tiles. It's still a pretty good book - stands the test of time, despite those little details that just screamed 90s. Ethnotechno, LJS? Really? Also, Phil's awesomeness is far more apparent now. I feel like writing fic about him, which was surprising.

I think I'll reread the rest of Night World. After all, we may see Strange Fate sometime next year (if there's anyone on my flist who didn't know, LJS, like Wispas and leggings and other 90s paraphernalia, is back. Yes, that is a unicorn. No, I don't know why.). And it means I can avoid Nightfall a little longer.

I must also recommend Ilona Andrews' Magic series. It's what urban fantasy was meant to be. It's exciting, sexy, funny, breathtaking, mischievous, and a cut above most of what's out there. The latest, Magic Strikes, has just come out. I was up until 2am reading it. Get it. (Or borrow it from me. Whichever. It's fab.)

So. I have procrastinated enough. Back to packing and cleaning. Tomorrow, I'll be in a new flat.

Funny how I'm still procrastinating over Nightfall, too. XD

BTW, I can't remember if I thanked you or not for the last TT donation. If I didn't, apologies and many thanks! :)

I have it on the laptop. I just can't bring myself to do it. Time is so precious. Nightfail is, by all accounts, so crap.

You did, and no worries :D Very much my pleasure!

Yay for Smith! At least she's more than making up for her absence with a few gems (hopefully) in store for us.

You know, I've been considering Andrews' Magic series for a while now and I wasn't sure if it was my cup of tea. I might just give it a try now that you've recced it :)

I also hear you on the burn marks side of things. I'm covered in carpet burns from an accidental (I say accidental, but I was very drunk and decided to use my friend's neck as a swing, which failed miserably) trip in a club. Sigh :( I look like I'm twelve again, with boo-boos in all those glaringly-obvious places.

Well, I don't know if you've seen Nightfall yet (if not, and you want to, sling an email my way), but it's had very mixed reviews. I am hoping SF will be better, but given that she's said it's already 1000 pages (!) and she's not done yet, I am a little tentative.

Yes, Andrews is awesome. I love her series. She subverts quite a few of the genre cliches too.

Oh, those crazy club burns ;) I wish I'd seen that! My finest ever night-out relics were cuts all over my feet where I had trodden on broken glass and not noticed. It was gacky.

Is evil empire back up yet? I went a couple of weeks ago and it was AWOL. :(

I didn't even realise it was out already, but I checked Amazon and it looks like her old fans aren't particularly happy with it. What a disappointment.

Ouch! I don't think I've ever done that, mostly because when I'm that drunk I can never seem to figure out how to take my shoes off at the end of the night, nevermind during the night. Haha.

No, EE isn't back up yet, unfortunately. It's been down for a while and I really don't think it'll be back for a while longer, to be honest. I've been getting my e-books via torrents, mostly because I can't afford to buy enough books to keep me going :( But if you need anything to read, lemme know and I'll give you a list of e-books that I already own, or I can post you a few off my bookshelf like I did last time.

Yes, it's caused controversy. She also flounced off Amazon claiming all the negative reviews were by the same person. (They weren't - I know a fair few of those people, and they were just damn disappointed.)

I had the shoes on, but they were very thin and strappy (and metallic pink! I miss those shoes so much.), so the glass kind of got in between and...well mess.

If you want to borrow any books, let me know! I can post them up to you on my days off. I have a pretty big selection, so feel free to have a browse and pick a few.

Ooh, rec me some e-books! It's always really interesting to see what other people like.

Yeah, I saw that. I just hope she doesn't go all-out Anne Rice/Hamilton-crazy if she continues to ger bad reviews. I suppose it's difficult to be confronted with the possibility that you've lost your spark after being gone so long, but it's difficult for an author to defend her work, because at the end of the day, it's not herself that she has to impress.

Oh, ouch. That's some seriously evil shoes, Ki =p

That'd be great :D I'll let you pick 'em. I think you know my tastes better than I do ;)

It's sad, because I honestly haven't read any great books that I'd rec in the last couple of months. They've all been pretty mediocre. The last books I read that were genuinely fun and etertaining to read were Richelle Mead's Storm Born and Karen Marie Moning's Fever Series.

Mead's book is your typical urban fantasy. You've got your kick-ass heroine with a dark, mysterious past who is destinied for great things, yada yada. It's very atypical, but Mead really nails the genre. Her heroine is approachable, unlike a lot of heroines out there, and she definitely mixes it up a little bit with her characters and her worlds. It doesn't break the mold, but it's one of the few urban fantasies I've read lately that didn't out-and-out bore me with its ABC plot and generic characters.

Moning's Fever Series follows the cliche in some ways. Heroine is an ordinary girl who finds out she's not so ordinary after all. What I like about this series, though, is that the heroine doesn't have all these superhuman powers or anything. She can see the Fae, and that's not necessarily a good thing. I also like it because the heroine is incredibly stubborn in certain respects because she refuses to leave her old self behind and lose herself in the bad shit that happens. And this series has some bad shit in it. It gets dark sometimes, really dark in others, but it still stays dramatic and funny and intense. This series is everything that Marrs' should have been but never was. I think you'll like it :)

I am told she is much more reasonable in one on one emails, but can't comment for myself as I haven't emailed her. I think the old magic is probably there, but she needs to get back into the swing. I mean, Nightfall came out incredbly quickly! And it's an enormous book. I'd rather it had taken a few months more and been tightly edited.

Okay :D I shall pick you out some books! PM me your address and I'll send 'em over. They should get posted Tuesday or Wednesday (I'm through the night, so I at least have the daytime to run errands). Also, I just spelt Tuesday Toesday, which makes me wonder what it would be like if it were a day about toes. Hmm.

Don't worry! This summer is bringing a glut of awesome books, especially in the YA section. I think we will be more than happy :D

Ooh, both Mead and Moning sound very intriguing. I would love to read those, if I can get my hands on them?

Urban fantasy can get a bit paint-by-numbers now. All you have do is walk into the section and the bulk of the covers are the same. It's mind-boggling.

I have borrowed Marr's second, but haven't read it yet. I've had caveats from everyone who has, so I think it'll be an interesting read.

That fall sounds ... like many ouches. Ouch!

I was re-reading a little of Nightworld over this weekend as well! Just Soulmate, the first one I ever got and read (given to me as a Christmas present, actually) - obviously I have to admit it made much more sense when I then started from number one and worked my way up to that one. You're right about them standing the test of time - I look at some things from my youth and cringe, but these books, nope...!

If I ever go into a book shop, I always go to the Children's section to see whether Nightworld is there, and it never is - I then feel dismayed that so many people are missing out.

Could you give me a summary about Magic? Obviously no spoilers, but I would say that your recommendations are of value!

Hope you heal up soon!

It has been a week of ouches. Sometimes, it all happens at once.

I think a lot of people are digging out the LJS again. She is back, after all, and even though it's been a decade, I want to read Strange Fate. It's weird though - all the fandom and fanfic has moved on so much, it all feels very retro.

I am going through them in order, so it'll be a while before I hit Soulmate. I hear it has been shamelesly ripped off in a new YA book (Evermore), only in this one, the Thierry equivalent dates the Maya equivalent between deaths. Classy, eh?

It is sad how NW has dropped out of the shelves. Although - hilarity! - did you ever read any of the Caroline B Cooney Point Horrors in a misspent youth? She wrote loads, but there was a vampre trilogy that stuck in my mind.

Well, I was in Foyles with a friend and we spotted these books and had a nostalgic squeal over them. Then we looked more closely. It was called Horror High or something, and as we read the blurbs, realised they looked...familiar.

Same books. But not realised under their old titles, oh no. Instead all the characters' names have been changed and made more modern and edgy, but the prose is exactly the same. Beneath the new covers (which are more Heartbreak High than Point Horror), it's the same glorious nineties horror. Pretty cheeky.

The Magic series centres around Kate Daniels, a mercenary in a world where magic and technology collide. It starts off as fairly typical fantasy fare - she's a problem solver of all things supernatural - but as the story goes on, the quality of characterisation and plot becomes apparent.

When her guardian is murdered, she finds herself caught between two groups of power-hungry supernaturals as she strives to find his killer. The Pack are led by super-sexy Curran, a lion shapeshifter who views Kate as alternately a threat, a nuisance, and a challenge. His goal is clearly the protection of his people at all cost - I get a sense of family from the shapeshifters in these books that you don't find elsewhere, for all that authors fake shoddy characterisation with descriptions of animal group habits.

The People are necromancers. They control vampires by riding their minds. This adds a whole new level of creepiness to both creatures, and makes the power plays and politics more interesting.

Kate herself is witty, tough, stubborn - again, fairly standard heroine descriptors. But there is something about the way Andrews writes her that really makes me love her. I like the fact when she makes a mistake, she has to suffer the consequences: and when she wins, she wins because she was smarter, usually, not just because she was uberpowered.

There are hints of her past which made me grimace a little in the first book and wonder if this was going down the Anita Blake route. I'm up to Book Three and so far it hasn't happened, so I'm hopeful. Her backstory is unravelled naturally, and Kate doesn't angst over it. It's there, she doesn't like it, but she deals and get on with life.

I've read a lot of urban fantasy (Anita Blake, Vickie Patterson, Jim Butcher, Carrie Vaughn, to name a few), and this is top of the heap for me. It's the only series I've stayed up till 2am reading, and the only book I'm actively waiting on in this genre.

Enough of a rec? Vague plot-wise, but I don't want to spoil it too much. All I can say is reeeeeeeeead it.

Mmm Curran.

I ordered "Magic Strikes" from Barnes and Noble because they were releasing it early. That's how badly I wanted to read the book ;) The best in the series, no question.

That reminds me. I've just restarted writing and posting Rome officially. Please shoot me now ;)

Hope you can kick your landlord's ass.

Mmm Curran indeed. I admit, I squeed during the end half of that book.

And Kate! I adore her total non-ego issues about her past. The lack of angst is fab. The series is just going from strength to strength. I really like the shaepshifter hierarchy as well - I find it very realistic as a social structure, based on the human side as well as the animal one.

Hahaha. Good luck! Good luck with Rome :) Are you putting it up on FFN?

I aim to. He's being a right pain. Lesson very much learned there.

I totally figured out Kate's "secret" in book one, so I wasn't surprised by that revelation, but yeah, I really like the shapeshifters. They actually seem like actual human beings, not just the HOT ANGSTY! STUDMUFFINS (not that there's anything wrong with that), yet they also have their animal sides.

Muchly appreciated that there's only Kate and Curran, not Kate and 2342095343 long-haired guys chasing after her.

I'm writing Rome as original, so it actually goes on Fictionpress.

Don't get me wrong, I miss the fanfiction, but with the, um, recent developments in the fandom, I think I'm better off with original works for now.

And yes, that means I haven't read Nightfall yet. I'm too scared to.

I have no objections to HOT ANGSTY! STUDMUFFINS as a rule, but seeing them in every urban fantasy book in the same alpha-beta growling snapping biting snarling blah blah blah gets very dull after a while. Not that I'm looking at Laurell K Hamilton or anything.

Oh, the long haired thing...

Heh. Well, the crazy is all coming from th author. The fen are still sane! In fact it's quite nice and cosy over in the old-school section of fandom, where we can all boggle in unison.

I have NF. I'm going to tackle it. Wish me luck. If I don't come back, el my family I love them...

I'm kind of terrified about what Strange Fate will look like.
